Trick - or Treating Safety

Halloween is just a few weeks away and we at Safety Resources, Inc. want to share a few trick – or – treating safety tips.

Find out which day in your community is the official trick or treat day/evening.
When buying costumes, wigs, and accessories, purchase only those with labels clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
Make costumes that are bright, reflective, and short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement, or contact with flames. If their costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight.
Review with your children the principle of "Stop-Drop-Roll" in case their clothes catch on fire.
Masks can limit or block eyesight, so consider using non-toxic makeup and decorative hats instead.
Secure emergency ID (name, address, phone number) discreetly within the Halloween costume or on a bracelet.
Make sure that shoes fit well.
Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is before you begin trick-or-treating
Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available.
Follow your children around, whether they like it or not.
Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch.
When the children knock on the door to get a treat, stand behind them on the porch. That way the kids are free to enjoy themselves, and the person opening the door can clearly see an adult is caring for these children.
Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch.
Remind them to not get near cars or into cars without your express permission.
Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with.

Notify law enforcement authorities of any suspicious or unlawful activity.
